History

The Pawleys Island SC Lions Club was chartered in 1984, by the Georgetown, SC Lions Club, our corporate “parent”. Today, we are a group of 35 men and women, committed to improving conditions in the community "WE SERVE".

Our association was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1917. Lions Clubs International has grown to be the world's largest service organization with more than 1.4 million members belonging to local clubs in most countries of the world. The headquarters of Lions Clubs International is in Oak Brook, Illinois. A board of directors governs the international association, which is elected annually at the International Convention.

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their International Convention, and challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities.

Our Reasons for Existence

At or near the bottom of each page in this web site, you will notice the words (in large, bold type) “WE SERVE”. Those words exemplify the purpose of our club: to provide community service, particularly in the areas of sight preservation and correction, which is an effort of Lions worldwide. In addition, Pawleys Island Lions provide support to Habitat for Humanity, the Tara Hall Home for Boys, the Pawleys Island-Litchfield Rescue Squad, and numerous other local organizations and charitties.

In 2002, The Pawleys Island Lions Club was awarded the first ever "Governor's Award for Community Service". This award, made by the governor of the Lions district in which we reside, recognizes the high level of commitment to providing needed services to our local community, and reinforces our assertions that this truly a "can-do" organization. Our support to local charities is more than "writing a check" - - Pawleys Island Lions did the real, hands-on work of building a Habitat for Humanity home, entertained a group of boys from Tara Hall at a Myrtle Beach Pelicans ball game, and co-sponsored an event to honor emergency service workers and their families from the NYFD. These Lions "walk the talk"!

If you would like to make a difference in our community, you should consider membership in The Pawleys Island Lions Club! To speak with one of our members, please select the “Membership” box on the left of this page, and contact any of the members listed there. And, please, take time to sign our guest book; we'd like to hear your comments about our website.
